a herd of triceratops dinosaurs grazing grass

Hello, funtastic kids and parents! I don’t know if you are as passionate about dinosaurs as my kids are, but maybe, after learning some interesting facts about when they disappeared, you will want to learn even more about these amazing creatures! So join me in the quest of learning how did the dinosaurs disappear. At the end of these did you know facts for kids, we will also test your dino knowledge with some quiz! So let’s dive right in and start learning!

Did You Know? The Day the Dinosaurs Disappeared!

Sixty-six million years ago, dinosaurs had their very last day on Earth. Can you imagine a time when dinosaurs roamed everywhere for a super long time—almost 180 million years? They were here way before humans or animals we know today! But one day, something huge happened that changed everything and made the dinosaurs disappear! Let’s see below what happened…

Did You Know? What Happened to the Dinosaurs?

Many scientists believe that a giant rock from outer space, called an asteroid, crashed into Earth and changed everything. It was so powerful that it caused big changes all over the world! Two scientists, Luis and Walter Alvarez, figured this out when they found a special kind of rock that is only made by asteroid crashes. So, in 1980, scientists Luis Walter Alvarez and his son Walter noticed something interesting – a special layer of clay with high levels of iridium. Iridium is a rare metal on Earth, but it’s common in asteroids! Finding this metal helped scientists figure out that a massive asteroid likely hit Earth 66 million years ago, causing enormous changes. So, this clay layer with Iridium helped them find the spot where they think the asteroid hit, and it’s now the most famous reason why dinosaurs went away.

Did You Know? How Big Was the Asteroid?

This asteroid was super big—maybe as wide as ten soccer fields lined up! When it hit Earth, it made a giant hole called a crater on the coast of Mexico. Scientists call it the Chicxulub crater, and it is one of the biggest craters ever found. The crash was so powerful that it threw dust, rocks, and smoke way up into the sky and this blocked out sunlight all over Earth, which made it hard for plants to grow. And guess what? When plants can’t grow, animals that eat plants don’t have food. Then, animals that eat other animals can’t find food either so it was like a big food problem for everyone!

Did You Know? Why Did So Many Animals Disappear?

The crash was like knocking over a stack of blocks—one thing led to another! First, plants had trouble growing because of all the dust and smoke in the sky. Then, plant-eating dinosaurs like the big, gentle Triceratops couldn’t find enough food. And without plant-eating dinosaurs around, meat-eaters like the T-Rex started to go hungry too. In fact, about 75% of all animals couldn’t survive! This big change meant a lot of animals, including all non-bird dinosaurs, couldn’t survive.

Did You Know? Who Survived the Asteroid Crash?

Even though the dinosaurs disappeared, some animals found ways to survive! Many birds, small animals, and plants managed to live through this tough time. Birds are actually related to dinosaurs, so it’s like we still have a little piece of dinosaurs flying around today! How awesome is that? Also, small animals that could hide underground or live without much food had a better chance of surviving, thus making them the beginning of many animals we know today!

🦖 Dino Discovery Quiz! 🦖

Great job on learning new things, little dino detectives! 🌟 Now, since you already travelled back in time to learn about the amazing dinosaurs and their “last day”, let’s test what you remember from the exciting facts. Put on your dino explorer hats, and let’s get started!

Question 1: How many years ago did the big asteroid hit Earth and change things for the dinosaurs?

A) 10 million years ago
B) 66 million years ago
C) 100 million years ago

Answer: B) 66 million years ago! That’s when a huge asteroid hit Earth and marked the end of the age of dinosaurs.

Question 2: What is the name of the scientist who came up with the asteroid theory?

A) Luis Walter Alvarez
B) Paul Barrett
C) Albert Einstein

Answer: A) Luis Walter Alvarez! Along with his son, Walter, he suggested that an asteroid caused the dinosaurs to disappear.

Question 3: What special metal did scientists find that helped them figure out the asteroid story?

A) Gold
B) Iridium
C) Silver

Answer: B) Iridium! It’s a rare metal on Earth, but more common in meteorites, which helped scientists solve the dinosaur mystery.

Question 4: Where did the asteroid make a big crater?

A) In Africa
B) In Mexico
C) In Antarctica

Answer: B) In Mexico! The crater is called the Chicxulub crater, and it’s still there on the seafloor off Mexico’s coast.

Question 5: What happened to the sunlight after the asteroid hit?

A) It got brighter
B) It got darker because of dust
C) It stayed the same

Answer: B) It got darker because of dust! The asteroid impact sent so much debris into the sky that it blocked some sunlight, making it harder for plants to grow.

Bonus Question: Who survived the asteroid impact along with small animals?

A) Dinosaurs
B) Birds
C) Big reptiles

Answer: B) Birds! Birds are actually relatives of the dinosaurs, and some of them survived and are still around today!
